Growing Seeds and Plugs

Seed Propagation in a 4 Tier Mini Greenhouse

Propagation of seeds is not as difficult as you may think, and a mini greenhouse is an excellent way to do it.

The mini greenhouse is ideally placed outside on a patio or balcony, in a sunny spot. Put it against a wall where the sun will hit it, and secure it well to avoid accidents such as toppling or blowing over in a strong wind.

Now you have the ideal place to start propagating seeds. Seeds know it's time to germinate when the temperature of the soil increases at the start of the growing season. By placing your seed trays in a mini greenhouse, the sun's energy is captured and the inside of the greenhouse warms up to stimulate this germination.

It's important to place the mini greenhouse outdoors, because your seeds also require light to grow. They get this sunlight while being protected and warmed by the mini greenhouse.

Make sure that you water your seeds regularly, as they will not get any rain water being covered up in the greenhouse. On hot sunny days, roll the front panel of the cover back to allow some airflow, and prevent over-heating.

Some ventilation is good to prevent excessive humidity building up. While some humidity is good for young seedlings, too much will cause them damage. The best approach is to leave the panel a bit ajar, and open it further on really hot days.

Plug Plants

Bringing on Plugs in Mini Greenhouse

If you are buying small plugs then the mini greenhouse is an excellent intermediate step to planting them out in the garden beds and borders.

Plugs can be readily bought from most garden centres, but are still small and relatively weak. You can harden them up gradually by using the mini greenhouse as a half way house to planting out.

Use a shuttle tray, which is a large tray with many little pots. Fill the pots with compost and plant a plug in each. The plugs often come in blister packs, so open the packs carefully or press them out of the plastic with a pen.

Give them some water, and pop them into the mini greenhouse. This will protect them from any late frosts or cold weather, as well as pests. This will allow them to harden up and come on a bit to get well established before you plant them out.
