Common Questions About Mini Greenhouses
Frequently Asked Questions
Why buy a mini greenhouse?
If you don't have a lot of space in your garden, and don't have a full size walk-in greenhouse then the mini version makes an excellent alternative. Allowing you to grow seeds and plugs easily in smaller gardens, patio's or terraces, a mini greenhouse is compact and a low cost solution for the keen gardener.
It looks flimsy, will it blow away?
The branded versions are surprisingly robust, with strong plastic covers. The covers roll up or part at the front, and the frame is usually aluminium or steel. They are best put in a sheltered spot on the patio, but you can secure them to a wall with custom ringlets in the back of the cover.
How much do they cost?
It depends if you opt for a branded version such as Gardman's range, or a cheaper unbranded version but they can range from £20 to £40 typically. A replacement cover will set you back £10.
How big are they?
You will need an area of about 70cm by 50cm for the greenhouse, the height depends which size you go for but the larger ones are around 1.5m in height. The best thing to do is position the mini greenhouse with some space around it to work in, you'll be swapping trays in and out, and so a good working space is handy.
Will my plants overheat?
In most cases your seedlings will be fine. On particularly hot days, open the front of the cover to allow some airflow. The biggest danger is excessive humidity, you don't want your young plants being damaged by this so open the flap in hot weather and with moist soil.
